PURPOSE:To produce high-purity maleimides in one step reaction and high yield from maleic anhydride using a solvent capable of readily carrying out separation and recovery of maleimide and an inexpensive acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Sulfuric acids which are previously used as acid catalysts are subjected to azeotropic dehydration together with an aromatic organic solvent and after dehydration, an aprotic polar solvent and a maleic anhydride are added thereto and the mixture is refluxed. After starting reflux, aromatic primary amines are dropwise added thereto while eliminating the produced water to produce the objective N-arylmaleimides of the formula (R<1> to R<5> are H, halogen, NO2, OH, COOH, 1-6C alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl or sulfone). |
