PURPOSE:To enable high-yield production of the subject compound from ethylene cyanohydrin using a Raney cobalt catalyst with extremely high industrial advantage. CONSTITUTION:Catalytic hydrogenation of ethylene cyanohydrin is carried out in ammonia using a Raney cobalt catalyst of less than 0.2 pts.wt. of Raney cobalt catalyst per 1 pt.wt. of ethylene cyanohydrin at a temperature lower than 150 deg.C, preferably 80 to 100 deg.C, at a pressure over 30kg/cm<2>, preferably 40 to 60kg/cm<2>, to give 3-aminopropanol. In the reaction, an aliphatic alcohol or aromatic hydrocarbon is used as a solvent, but the reaction is not influenced even in the absence of the solvent, if the amount of catalyst is less than 0.25 pt.wt. per 1 pt.wt. of ethylene cyanohydrin. |
