PURPOSE:To prevent the temperature rise around a liquid crystal panel by providing an optical element, which allows only a predetermined linearly polarized light to be incident on polarizing plates, between a light source and the polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:An optical element 11, which allows a predetermined linearly polarized light to be incident on polarizing plates 1a through 3a, between a light source 10 and a first dichroic mirror 4. The optical element 11 is consisted of beam splitters having transmission and reflection characteristics such that no light containing a polarizing light component except that which passes through the polarizing plates 1a through 3a, for example, reaches the polarizing plates la through 3a. The predetermined linearly polarized light is that which conforms to the direction of the transmission axis of the polarizing plates 1a through 3a, no other linearly polarized light reaches the polarizing plates 1a through 3a. Thus, it is necessary to interrupt the other linearly polarized light by means of the polarizing plates 1a through 3a, so that no temperature rise due to the absorption takes place. |
