PURPOSE: To use an ester ofγ-hydroxybutyric acid and acyl-L-carnitine for producing a composition capable of being orally or parenterally administrated for treating hepctopathy. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition capable of being orally or parenterally administrated for treating hepatopathy is prepared by using an ester ofγ-hydroxybutyric acid and acyl-L-carnitine, especially a pharmacologically acceptable salt of a salt with an anion such as the ester of formula I (X<-> is a pharmacologically acceptable anion, or an intramolecular salt of the ester of formula II as an active ingredient. The ester is preferably used in a form of a salt with an anion such as chloride, bromide, orotate, acidic aspartate, etc. The compounds of formulas I and II are also a liver persistent preparation and is effective for treatment of hepatic disease such as viral hepatitis.
