An endoscopic instrument (endoscope or speculum) is provided with a chemiluminescent light source for inspection and examination of body cavities. The light source comprises a body containing at least two compartments separated by a barrier, each compartment filled with a suitable fluorescing component, such that by breaking the barrier between the compartments and causing admixing of the components, a chemical reaction occurs, which produces the chemiluminescent effect. A vaginal speculum is provided having cooperating upper and lower dilator blades pivoted with respect to one another, a means associated with at least one dllator blade for releasably engaging thereto a chemiluminescent light source adapted to direct its light intermediate the dilator blades in their extended position to illuminate the body cavity being examined. Also provided is a medical examination light able to be removably secured to a speculum of the type having a body and a plurality of dilator members extending therefrom, the light comprising a light transmitting member attached to an open-ended elastomeric sleeve member of sufficient size to encircle the extending portion of a dilator blade, receiving and retaining it in a removable tight friction fit thereon. |
