PURPOSE:To surely generate alarm by adjusting the alarm output timing according to the consciousness level of a driver, in the case of an alarm device for a vehicle which generates alarm when the inter-vehicle distance from a preceding vehicle becomes less than the safe inter-vehicle distance. CONSTITUTION:The inter-vehicle distance data detected by a inter-vehicle distance sensor 10 is supplied into a microcomputer 14 through a buss 13. The microcomputer 14 calculates the average value mn of the inter-vehicle distance and the standard deviation sigman in the ordinary drive for each car speed division divided in each prescribed car speed interval DELTAv. The consciousness level of a driver is evaluated from the equation dn=¦(LB-mn)/sigman¦ by using the inter- vehicle distance LB at the time of brake operation, average value mn, and the standard deviation sigman, and the safe inter-vehicle distance is corrected by using this evaluation value, and the alarm output timing is adjusted.
