PURPOSE:To provide a new microbial strain enabling the culture of carnitine dehydrogenase without adding carnitine to the system and useful for producing carnitine dehydrogenase by a simple purifying method. CONSTITUTION:The objective essentially pure microorganism capable of producing carnitine dehydrogenase is a microorganism belonging to Escherichia coli transformed by a recombinant plasmid containing a DNA expressing carnitine dehydrogenase. For example, a DNA having the base sequence of formula is integrated into plasmid pUC118 and transformed to Escherichia coli DHI (ATCC 33849) and microorganism capable of forming CDH is selected to obtain the objective Escherichia coli DHI.pcCDH2 (FERM BP-12347).
