Date Jul. 11, 1991.An internal combustion engine assembly of the compound type for vehicles comprises an internal combustion engine, a turbine and a transmission arranged between the turbine and a crankshaft forming part of the engine. The turbine is designed to be driven by exhaust gases from the engine. On the rear end of the crankshaft a gear wheel is mounted. On this gear wheel there is formed a flange which functions as an extension of the crankshaft and attachment for a flywheel. With the present invention, it is possible to transmit the power from the turbine to the crankshaft without modifying the ring gear of the flywheel. The invention also affords advantages in terms of manufacturing, assembly and maintenance technology.
