The conveying apparatus for piece goods has a very long, essentially horizontal conveying section (5) in a very small space. The compact design is achieved by means of vertical modules (10a, 10b) in which a second chain wheel (11b) is fastened above a first chain wheel (11a) on the same drive shaft (2), the respectively second chain wheel (11b) of a preceding module (10a) also representing the first chain wheel of the following module (10b). Between the chain wheels (11), there are provided means for deflection, for example pulleys (14) designed as a semicircle. The conveying section (5) has, in sections or in total, a slight inclination, the angle of inclination of which does not reach the limiting angle with respect to static friction.
