The power transmitted from a drive shaft to a shaft 20 to be driven by means of an endless flexible link wound around them is ordinarily limited. In order to increase it, the present invention envisages using, as a link, a cable 1 with very high tensile strength and winding it around the shaft 20 to be driven with a winding angle greater than 200@. This method is implemented, for example, by a mechanical system in which the cable 1 is wound alternately over a drum 2 secured to the shaft 20 to be driven and over a series of idling pulleys 4 set out along an axis substantially parallel to that of the shaft 20 to be driven. This system may therefore be incorporated into various devices in order to produce, in particular, a speed-reduction gear, a differential, or changes in speed (gear changes). <IMAGE>
