Device for transmitting and/or storing signals representing a texture which are available in the form of digital signals corresponding to the brightness of the points of an image, comprising: (A) a circuit (31) for extracting a reference sample representative of the texture, and a circuit (33) for compiling a dictionary from blocks of the sample; (B) circuits (32, 34) for coding the output signals from the said sample extraction circuit and for coding, by vector quantisation, the said texture signals with the aid of the said dictionary-compiling circuit; (C) means (35) for transmitting and/or storing the coded output signals from the said coding circuits; (D) a circuit (36) for decoding the coded sample signals and a circuit (37) for recompiling a dictionary on the basis of the output signals from this decoding circuit; (E) a circuit (38) for decoding by vector quantisation, for the purposes of reproducing an image corresponding to the texture.
