The present invention relates to a device for stopping the drum (8) in the position with the trapdoor at the top. It comprises a braking mechanism (1, 6) which is normally at a top rest position in which the drum rotates freely. At the end of a washing cycle, this mechanism is lowered down towards an active position in which a lever (6) is in the path of a finger (14) integral with the drum. The drum is then set into rotation again and its finger encounters the lever at a given instant. This lever is driven by the finger over a short distance until reaching a limit stop (22). When the finger starts to drive the lever, the drive motor of the drum is stopped, the drum continues to rotate by inertia, but is rapidly braked by the mechanism over the above-mentioned short distance. <IMAGE>
