Process for the preparation of cetyltrimethylammonium d-2-(6'-methoxy-2'-naphthyl)propionate of formula: <IMAGE> consisting: a) in treating an aqueous cetyltrimethylammonium halide solution with an ion exchange resin in the hydroxy form; b) in reacting the cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide obtained with d-2-(6'-methoxy-2'-naphthyl)propionic acid; c) in separating the water by evaporation; d) in optionally purifying the product obtained.
