PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an engine which can attain restoration of a function of a valve timing mechanism, by judging abnormality of a hydraulic actuator to perform cleaning control. SOLUTION: This control device for an engine is provided with an actuator controlling a valve timing adjusting means of an air intake valve, the control device comprises means learning action start duty of the actuator, means learning stop duty from the action start duty, and means calculating output duty of the actuator from the action start duty and the stop duty from each of the learning means, additionally means resetting a learning value of the stop duty is provided, the means resetting the learning value of the stop duty is constituted by resetting the learning value of the stop duty for driving the actuator in the case that the learning value of the stop duty reaches a prescribed value.
