The invention relates to a method for polishing a long, thin article (2) such as a test-piece (2) intended to be stressed along its longitudinal axis. It is characterised in that: - means are oriented and actuated, which means provide the relative movements of the technical surface and of the abrasive surface (8a) controlling the cutting so that the abrasion is carried out along a direction at least substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis (3) so that the said cut is thus carried out in highly elongate helices tending towards a parallel to the axis (3), - the holding means of the tool are associated with an axis of oscillation which, when the article is gripped by its own holding means, lies at a certain distance from the said holding means and the abrasive surface is rested on the test-piece so that the pressure results only from the forces of gravity exerted on the mobile equipment, and - a large series of translational movements of the tool along the longitudinal axis of the article to be polished is executed. <IMAGE>
