PURPOSE:To provide a highly efficient coding method, coder and decoder in which the propagation of the effect of a decoding error due to noise or the like is reduced with respect to the coding method, coder and decoder used for compressing, sending and recording a digital signal. CONSTITUTION:In the coder and decoder for a digital signal, a block code length measurement device 5 measures a code length of a code string divided into blocks and the code length is recorded or sent while being separated from the code string and the code length is used to allow a block termination recognition device 8 to recognize the end of the block for the decoding. Thus, the effect of a decoding error due to noise or the like is prevented over a block and picture quality deterioration due to error is reduced. |
