The bladed rotor shaft (8) is mounted inside flanged bearing shields (3) and has a short sleeve (10) between the flange and the cutting blades to prevent grass from being wound onto the shaft. The sleeve has a stepped end which has a pres fit into the flange and locates the shaft bearing (9). The sleeve has a splined fit into the flange mounting. The bearing support can be strengthened by an annular insert. The shaft extends through the sleeve with a splined support for a gear wheel (11), which drives the cutter blades.
