A magnetic recoding head has a support surface across which the magnetic material moves. The surface is formed on a base of Mn.Zn. Fe and is some 50 nm thick (14). This is coated with a layer of crystalline diamond and an amorphous carbon. The crystalline diamond is formed as islands (15a) covered with a further layer of the amorphous carbon (15b,c) The layers are formed in a vapour deposition process and the finished surface is ground. ADVANTAGE - Provides head with high wear resistance and protection of running surface while keeping thin construction.
