The light-emitting diode has a transparent plastics casing (3) with a light output surface (5) at one end and projecting diode terminals (7, 8) at the other end. Part of the light-emitting diode (1), or an integral flange (14.1, 14.2) acts as a bayonet coupling for securing the diode in a seating provided by a transparent or translucent block (11). Pref. the diode (1) has 2 radially projecting flange sections (14.1, 14.2) of different radial or peripheral length, used to lock the diode (1) in the seating upon its rotation in a given direction.
