<p>Sunscreen compositions comprising from about 0.5 % to about 30 % by weight of a metal oxide which is titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or a mixture of both these oxides and from about 0.001 % to about 2 % by weight of iron oxide particles having a mean primary particle size of less than about 200 nm are described. The metal oxide may be substantially in the form of particles having a mean primary particle size of less than about 100 nm. The preferred form of iron oxide is iron (III) oxide. Optionally, either the metal oxide or the iron oxide particles or both are coated with a phospholipid such as lecithin. The sunscreen compositions may include phosphate anions. Sunscreen compositions comprising the above ingredients in both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions are also disclosed.</p> |
