As a result of the series connection according to the invention of an internal, domestic water-bearing hot water circuit 40a, 40b to the pipe system 52a, 52b for the heating water, as well as its heating taking place directly via the hot water circuit 52a, 52b, the output/volume ratio of the heater can be optimised and the domestic water convenience of an installation with externally installed domestic water storage tank can be achieved. Preferred area of application is heaters with a gas burner as heat source.
