A sewing machine with a gripper shuttle, has a freely revolving gripper with an internal spool, which is fixed. The gripper has a point to engage the loop of thread from the needle, and a cylindrical outer wall. There are sections cut away in the gripper and part of the race, at suitable positions for the interaction of the thread. In one of the cut-outs in the lip of the race, is a double sided projection, which has an operative purpose when a cut-out in the gripper is aligned to it. The cut-out in the gripper is in a region opposite the point. ADVANTAGE - The gripper permits a large spool, which runs quieter and efficiently. The spool is loaded easily. By clearing the thread from the needle loop, in the event of gripper reversal, the spool is not jammed.
