New vehicles must be coated with a preserving agent, which preferably takes the form of an easily soluble wax or the like. It protects the vehicle during transport or in the period between production and sale. The windows, especially the front and rear windows of the vehicle must be free, so that the vehicle can be manoeuvred and/or driven without hindrance during transport. To make cleaning of needlessly sprayed windows unnecessary, they are protected before spraying by means of a covering element (7 or 8) during application of the preserving agent in the apparatus according to the invention. Each covering element is situated on a controllable arm (5 or 6) which can be lowered from above. In one version of the apparatus, the vehicle is motionless during spraying and the apparatus is moved along the vehicle first in one direction and then in the opposite direction. In the first pass, all surfaces facing upwards and all lateral surfaces are sprayed, except for a narrow lateral edge. In the return pass of the apparatus, the remaining narrow edges are sprayed up to the windows. According to a second version of the invention, the vehicle moves through the apparatus and the arms having the covering elements (7, 8) are, in particular, moved synchronously and concomitantly.
