The liquid crystal display element is characterized in that a plurality of transparent electrodes (11,21) are arranged in a matrix form between transparent front plate (10) and rear plate (20), and oriented films (12,22) are formed between electrodes and exposed parts of two plates. The resistance of the front plate electrode (30-80Ω) is higher than that of the rear plate electrode (10-20Ω). The method can provide a liquid crystal display element, which ensures a uniform image contrast, at a lower price.
