A friction or inertial welded cylinder is made of a tube (12) and base member (14). The base member has an annular groove (22) that is positioned within the cylinder tube and which receives the kerf (34) formed on the interior of the cylinder during welding. The groove height is formed to provide a place to receive the kerf as it curls and to seal material within the groove so foreign materials do not later break loose from the kerf and cause damage to the cylinder assembly in use. <IMAGE>
