POLYSILANE DERIVATIVE AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To provide the subject new polymer useful for non-linear optical elements, etc., and having an amphiphilic or aqueous property by subjecting the benzene rings of a polysilane derivative having a specific structure to a halomethylation reaction and subsequently quaternizing the tertiary amino groups. CONSTITUTION:A polysilane derivative having repeating units of formula I (R is alkyl; X is 0-2) is reacted with a halomethyl ether (e.g. chloromethylmethyl ether) in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g. aluminum chloride) to halomethylate the benzene rings of the polysilane derivative. The resultant polysilane derivative is reacted with a tertiary amine of formula N(R')3 (R' is alkyl) (e.g. trimethyl amine) to provide the objective quaternized polymer having repeating units of formulas I and II (A<-> is anion residue having a valency corresponding to the monovalency of the anion) and having a number-average mol.wt. of 1300-200000. The polysilane derivative comprising repeating units of formula I is produced e.g. by polycondensing an alkylaryldichlorosilane.
