PURPOSE:To produce acrylamide or methacrylamide in high ef-ficiency while preventing the reactional activity of a Raney-copper catalyst used in the catalytic hydration reaction of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. CONSTITUTION:A Raney-copper catalyst produced by developing an alloy of copper and aluminum with an alkaline aqueous solution is washed with an alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol and phenol, especially methanol and used as a catalyst for the catalytic hydration reaction of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile to obtain efficiency acrylamide or methacrylamide useful as a raw material for polymer having various applications such as flocculent, paper-strengthening agent and textile modifier. The alcohol is preferably used after removing the dissolved oxygen. The amount of the alcohol is preferably >=1 pt. based on 1pt. of the catalyst. Preferably, the contacting time is 10-120min and the contact temperature is 10-100 deg.C. |
