PURPOSE:To maintain the internal pressure constant without impairing the battery performance by using a negative electrode of a structure where a water repellent plasma poly-film is formed over the surface. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen occluding alloy electrode is composed of a pair of flat plate electrodes 2. 3 placed on a level parallelly, a suction port 4, exhaust port 5, and reaction device 6, and on the flat plate electrode 3, an electrode S to form a water repellent poly-film P is placed. A heater 7 is provided on the rear surface of the electrode 3 so as to heat electrode S. A plasma space is formed between the electrodes 2, 3, and the supporting shaft 9 of the electrode 3 is rotated by a motor M, and the coverage of the poly-film P over the electrode S is made uniform over the front surface. When thereafter the reaction gas is led into the reaction device 6 through the suction port 4, the gas is turned into plasma between the electrodes 2, 3 to form poly-film P over the surface of the electrode S. If this electrode S is used as negative electrode, hydrogen occluding and releasing in/from hydrogen occluding alloy are not hindered by the recombination water, so that the internal pressure of the battery can be held constant. This eliminates risk of impairing the battery characteristics. |
