The invention relates to a process for the simultaneous preparation of magnesium and cement from calcined dolomite, or for the simultaneous preparation of calcium and cement from calcined limestone, by reducing the dolomite or the calcined limestone under a pressure of less than 10 mmHg and at a temperature of 1300-1600 degrees C, using a reducing agent containing silicon and aluminium in a ratio (by weight) of between 4 : 1 and 1 : 1, where the total amount of silicon and aluminium is 50- 100 wt%. 100-200 parts by weight of the reducing agent are used for the conversion of 600-800 parts by weight of calcined dolomite or 700-1000 parts by weight of calcined limestone. The process gives cement as a by-product, which has the same composition as Portland cement, instead of giving a worthless slag.
