The speed maintaining device uses a regulating circuit with a mobile operating control (5) acting on the accelerator pedal (3) in dependence on the difference between the actual and required r.p.m. values. Pref. the operating control (5) has a push rod (6) acting directly on the accelerator pedal (3), its position being adjusted in dependence on the regulation error. Data transmission between the operating control (5) and an exhaust emission testing device is provided by an IR or ultrasonic link. USE - Exhaust emission testing devices checking emission levels for different speed ranges.
