An optical fibre is fixed in the groove of a holder by a welding process in which the fibre (F) is retained in the groove (N) by two simultaneously formed weld spots (S) of material melted from the holder (H). Pref. the weld spots (S) are formed by two laser beams. ADVANTAGE - The fibre is fixed without the use of additive material, the transmission properties of the fibre are not altered and the process is applicable to multimode and monomode, glass or plastic fibres.
