In a process for the mechanical treatment of waste consisting of cathode ray tubes, in which the glass of the screen and the cone of the tubes are separated and further processed thereafter, e.g. stripped, it is proposed that the tubes be broken up in two successive stages, in the first of which only the cone or the screen are broken up and during of after the breaking up process the fragments are sorted by size.
