In a process for depositing a metal coating onto a substrate by plasma transferred arc welding, a welding consumable in powdered form is fluidised by an argon/helium gas mixture and introduced into a plasma arc consisting of 60/40 v/v ratio or argon/helium and the resulting melt form and deposited onto the substrate is surrounded by an inert gas consisting of argon and containing 5% v/v hydrogen.
