To comminute larger ground matter in driving shields equipped with a jaw crusher installation, which ground matter cannot be discharged through the suction line, it is proposed to arrange the crusher in such a way that the crusher jaws (12) open downwards and the distance of the jaw crusher (12) from the floor level (8) of the winning chamber or the floor level of the shield circumference is dimensioned in such a way that the floor level (8) of the winning chamber can be swept directly during the swivelling movement of the crushing jaws (12) and the large heap of debris collecting at the lowest point of the winning chamber can be seized directly and comminuted.
