New, essentially vegetable material which has a density lower than 300 kg/m<3>, the said vegetable material being characterized in that it contains (a) vegetable, preferably cellulose, fibres, (b) a pulverulent vegetable filler which has a particle size smaller than 1.5 mm and preferably between 0.01 and 0.5 mm and originating from the wood industry, wood or vegetable scrap and/or from the agri-foodstuffs industry, and (c) a starchy substance, preferably a starchy natural polymer, and in that it has been expanded under the action of (d) a blowing agent incorporated into the mixture of the said fibres, of the said vegetable filler and of the said starchy substance. The invention also relates to the process for the preparation of this expanded material from the above ingredients (a), (b), (c) and (d), and to its use especially, on the one hand, in the field of packing, packaging, coatings and protection and, on the other hand, in the field of coating supports and for high-bulk paper and board.
