The method for requesting a secret number to perform a normal transmitting if the secret number matches a stored number, comprises the steps of detecting an OFF-HOOK state, by using an off-hook detector (6), in an initial state of a phone mode, and setting a relay (1) to a facsimile mode if the OFF-HOOK state is detected. A secret number is input, and then is identified to check whether or not it is exactly the same as a secret number stored in a memory (9). A normal transmitting mode is performed setting the relay to the phone mode if the two secret numbers are the same. The controller includes a transformer (2), an amplifier (3), a MODEM (4), a ring detector (5), an I/O buffer (7), and a CPU (8).
