A car navigation method and an apparatus thereof are provided to service a direction of a sacred place in the Middle East by representing a compass function through a car navigation apparatus. A car navigation apparatus includes a GPS(Global Positioning System) receiver(11), a memory(13), a map matching unit(12), a controller(14), a display unit(15), and a speaker(16). The GPS receiver receives a GPS signal from satellites and generates position data of vehicles based on the received GPS signal. The memory stores map data. The map matching unit matches the position data with the map data. The controller generates route guidance information based on the matched result, detects a direction required by users when a compass is selected by the users, and generates voice messages corresponding to the detected direction. The display unit displays a route guidance map which is included in the route guidance information, and a detected direction. The speaker outputs the route guidance voice information and a voice message corresponding to the detected direction.
