The positive-pressure suction system comprises a fluid circulation network having a vacuum source 14 at one end and a suction instrument 16 at the other. The suction is controlled by a control valve 18 which can be operated by a foot pedal. A positive-pressure device 20 is included in the fluid circulation network and can also be operated by the foot pedal in order to supply a brief jet of positive pressure to the suction instrument 16. The brief jet of positive pressure is used to expel material blocking the opening of the suction instrument 16. The brief jet of positive pressure can also be used to release material carried by the suction instrument from one place to another. <IMAGE>
