This energy absorber (3) comprises a flexible container (5) preinflated to a defined pressure and provided with a valve (6), the opening of which may be controlled by an electric system (16, 13, 15) above a predetermined threshold of the pressure in the container, which is a function, in particular, of the speed of the vehicle at the moment of the impact. When this threshold is exceeded and the rise in the pressure remains below a predetermined maximum value, the electric system (16, 15, 13) opens the closure member (8) of the valve (6) and controls the rate of pressure decrease in the container (5) after the impact, according to a preestablished law stored in memory in an electronics system (16). If the impact caused in the container (5) increases the pressure beyond the aforementioned maximum value, the valve (6) opens independently of the programming of the electronic system (16) and the container (5) deflates. This energy absorber can be inflated to normal vehicle tyre pressures and reused after an impact if it has not been broken. <IMAGE>
