A thin film magnetic head, wherein between a nonmagnetic oxide base plate (11) and a soft magnetic thin film (12), such as of Fe-Si-Al alloy, formed on the base plate (11), formed is a reaction preventive film (40) made of magnesia or an oxide material containing magnesia and preventing both of them from reacting on each other. Thereby, prevented are the deterioration of the magnetic characteristics of the soft magnetic thin film, the lowering of the output of reproduced signal of the magnetic head, and the increase of the residual stress produced in the interface between the soft magnetic thin film and the nonmagnetic oxide base plate. As a result, the thin film magnetic head has excellent magnetic characteristics. |
