A cutting insert is provided to easily remove swarf without increasing cutting resistance even when the cutting insert is fed in a traverse direction to broaden a groove width in the grooving operation. A cutting insert comprises an insert body(1) having a shaft shape and a cutting blade section(2) formed at one end of the insert body. The cutting blade section has a rectangular flank surface(5). The flank surface is provided with a pair of transverse cutting blades(3) extending lengthwise along the insert body, a front cutting blade(4) extending between the transverse cutting blades, and a pair of protrusions(11). The protrusions extend toward a corner(6) at which the transverse cutting blade crosses the front cutting blade.
