A substrate is oxidized with a source of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a peroxidase or a haloperoxidase and a soluble salt of Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Pd, Pt, Fe, Cr or Mn at a metal ion concentration of at least 0.1 mM.
