The image-forming device (12) is arranged to form picture images of the groove and groove face of the metal workpiece to be welded, using the welding arc as the source of light. A signal-processing device (24) receives signals from the image-forming device and stores, for two dimensions picture elements of the picture images output by the image forming device. In the signal-processing device, information on the picture elements stored in memory is integrated for one of X and Y co-ordinate axis directions. This is done to decrease the influence of noise by co-ordinating contours of picture images. The integrated information is then differentiated in the direction normal to the direction chosen for integration to provide information to a detector which determines the shapes of the groove and groove face. |
