In an electric arc furnace for producing steel by melting down scrap 27, in particular scrap iron and/or spongy iron and/or pig iron as well as additives, in a furnace vessel 1, at least one graphite electrode 11 which can be shifted in its longitudinal direction projects into the furnace vessel, an arc 26 being struck between the graphite electrode 11 and the charging material 27.
