The cast rotating plate, for the guide channel to pass a sliver into a can for filling, is fitted with a keyed covering plate over its under side, of a low friction material. The covering plate is pref. circular, and with a slightly larger dia. than the rotating plate unit. The edge projecting round the rotating plate is pref. rolled over an edge beading for a secure mounting. The cover can also be flush with the edge of the rotating plate, to be secured to the under surface by welded thread bolts for screwing into place at the under side of the rotating plate, or the flush cover can be adhesive-bonded in place. The covering plate is from sheet stainless steel or brass or is a ceramic plate. The surface of the covering, towards the sliver can, has a lightly structured surface character such as an orange peel or leather grain, to prevent sliver fibres from adhering to the plate cover surface. ADVANTAGE - The rotating plate casting, such as aluminium, has a rough outer surface and blowholes at its under side. The covering over the under side gives low friction against the sliver being passed into and compressed within the can, without polishing or grinding of the under surface, and without casting rejects through poor surface quality.
