Improved gloss pigments are produced by coating platelike substrates and are characterised in that an aqueous suspension composed of a metallic salt and of metal oxide and/or dyestuff particles is hydrolytically precipitated on the platelike substrat as a metal oxide-and/or dyestuff particles-containing metal hydroxide layer.
