Shell-and-tube heat exchanger, especially for cooling process gas under non-steady-state operating conditions, comprising a tube plate (1) which is joined to the shell (2) and the wall (4) of the inflow-side chamber (5) of the heat exchanger. In order to reduce fluctuating thermal stress in the edge region of the tube plate (1), said region is provided with means (16,19) for reducing the heat removal which may be designed, for example, as a tube chamber-side heat-insulating device or as a heating device. In addition, means may be provided for making the flow around the edge of the tube plate by the hot medium to be supplied more uniform.
