To achieve a precise ratio of matter in a mixture, esp. on dilution of activated sludge by clean water, between at least two samples, the sludge and water samples to be mixed are placed in containers (1, 3) with dimensions give the required mixing ratios as far as an overflow (18, 19). The container contents, up as far as the overflow, are transferred to a common mixing container (14). Sample containers (1, 3) of different dimensions can be used. The sludge volume is pref. determined in the mixing container, after the sludge has settled. At least two containers (1, 3) are fitted for samples of sludge and clear water, with the same dimensions as far as their overflows (18, 19) as the mixing ratios. The contents of each, as far as their overflows, are passed to a common mixing container (14). The contents of a container (1, 3) can be altered by moving the overflow (18, 19). A time-controlled pump (7,9) is in the feed to the each container (1, 3), and a control valve (12, 13) is in each transfer channel between the sample containers (1, 3) and the mixing container (14). USE/ADVANTAGE - The operation is used in refining sewage, to maintain a consistent sludge character and volume with periodic measurements. The samples of activated sludge and clear water are mixed with precise ratios to be determined how the sludge is diluted.
