At the bottom of a tank (2) containing waste water, sewage etc., is a shell open both ends forming an outlet opening. A hollow member (9) which is tilted about a horizontal axis (16) forms a device operated by the pressure of the liq. (1) in the tank, for raising and lowering a flap (17) across a discharge opening (6) at the bottom of the shell. This opening is at the end of a channel formed by a hroizontal partition (4) inside the shell. One side (19) of the hollow member forms the pressure side and the other side (20) forms the suction side. The hollow member is shaped as a quarter of a circle in cross section, and fits into an opening in a vertical partition inside the shell to form pressure and suction chambers (11,13). The suction chamber (13) has a branch connection (14) with an open topped vertical suction tube (7) outside the tank.
