The method controls the reference heat generation temperature for a heater to minimize power consumption in standby mode. It includes a microprocessor (1) for setting a certain reference temperature (T1) as the standby reference temperature (Ts) of a heater when a printer is in standby mode, performing print process after setting the reference temperatures (Ts) of the heater when the printing signal (PRINT) of negative level is inputted to the drive input terminal (IN) of the microprocessor (1), and returning to its initial state when the printing signal (PRINT) of positive level is inputted.
